Coincident Imaging and Spectrometric Observations of Zenith OH Nightglow Structure

چکیده
During the ALOHA-90 campaign a novel comparative study was made between near infrared wave structure imaged in the zenith using a CCD camera and that detected at infrared wavelengths by a Fourier Transform Spectrometer. Coincident measurements were made briefly on several occasions and for an extended period on 31 March. The temporal variations imaged in the near infrared structure during this night almost completely matched those detected in the OH (3,1) band spectrometer data when similar viewing fields were compared. However, the image data also displayed small scale wave forms that were not resolved by the larger field instrument. These structures exhibited significant changes in brightness and position on a time scale much shorter than the local Brunt-Vfiisfil/i period indicating that very high resolution measurements are necessary to investigate short period (<20 min) upper atmospheric wave motions.

Observations of OI 557.7 nm nightglow at Kolhapur (17 N), India
Ground-based nightglow observations of the atomic oxygen green line at 557.7 nm have been carried out at a low latitude station Kolhapur (17 N), India, during November 2003–April 2004 and December 2004–May 2005. The nocturnal behaviour of OI 557.7 nm intensity and a comparative study with simultaneous OH Meinel band temperature measurements has been presented. OI 557.7 nm intensity and OH tempe...

In January 1993 an extensive set of radar and optical data was gathered from various key sites around the world during a coordinated "10 Day Run" designed to investigate the coupled dynamic behavior of the upper atmosphere on a large, reediron and small scale. As part of this campaign an all-sky CCD imaging system was operated at Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico, to help quantify the response o...

As part of the ALOHA-93 campaign a high performance all-sky CCD imaging system was operated at Haleakala Crater, Maui, to obtain novel information on the properties and sources of short period gravity waves over an extended height range -80-100 kin. Sequential observations of the near infrared OH and O2(0,1) bands and the visible wavelength OI(557.7 nm) and Na(589.2 nm) line emissions have enab...
متن کاملA Full-Wave Investigation of the Use of a 'Cancellation Factor' in GW-Airglow Interaction Studies
Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) perturb minor species involved in the chemical reactions of airglow emissions in the mesopause region of the earth's atmosphere. The so-called 'Cancellation Factor' (CF) is defined as a transfer function relating the amplitude of airglow brightness fluctuation to the amplitude of GW-induced fluctuation in temperature [Swenson and Gardner, 1998]. This transfer fac...

[1] Venus Express (VEX) has been monitoring key nightglow emissions and thermal features (O2 IR nightglow, NO UV nightglow, and nightside temperatures) which contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the global dynamics and circulation patterns above ∼90 km. The nightglow emissions serve as effective tracers of Venus’ middle and upper atmosphere global wind system due to their variable pea...
